We began class with the CNN Student News. It included a report on the 70th anniversary of Soviet troops liberating Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945. We watch a 6 minutes C-SPAN biography of FDR, as the students answered questions about his life.
Students took a quiz over key terms, people and events from Chapter 8. They used their textbooks to trade and grade the quiz. We wrote on two essay topics today, which you can find on the assignments page. Complete at home and turn in on Thursday. We ended class watching more of The Perilous Fight. Students completed a handout about the life of FDR based on a brief C-SPAN video we watched. We took a quiz over Chapter 13.
Students wrote brief essays on two questions about appeasement and Roosevelt's leadership of the U.S. in the years leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. We watched more of The Perilous Fight. Today we began our study of World War II, chapters 13 & 14. We defined, identified and discussed terms and people from the first two sections of Chapter 13. The 40s were a time of great movies and music. We watched the Glenn Miller Band perform Chattanooga Cho0 Choo in the 1941 film Sun Valley Serenade. The song was the most popular song in America during the first three weeks of December 1941, the month when the United States was pulled into World War II by the attack on Pearl Harbor.
We watched part of the Perilous Fight, America's World War II in Color, covering much of what we had discussed earlier in class. Class ended with the CNN Student News. There will be a quiz over Chapter 13 next Tuesday. We learned more about the shooting yesterday in Paris at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, then watched the CNN Student News which opened with a report on this tragedy.
Students wrote a persuasive essay on the topic "Which U.S. president, Truman or Eisenhower, was more successful in accomplishing his goals?" Students used supporting facts from their textbooks and other sources. Update: students chose Eisenhower over Truman as the more successful president by almost 2 to 1. We watched a humorous (in hindsight) instructional film from 1951 about what to do on a date. Because members of the 114th Congress begin their new term today, we began class with a Bell Ringer activity: New Members of Congress Orientation and Transition. Students took a quiz over some basic congressional information, I explained the vocabulary terms, then students watched a brief C-SPAN video and answered three questions. We turned in the handout at the end of class.
We reviewed for the test over Chapters 15 & 16. Students worked in pairs to answer multiple-choice questions at the end of each chapter, followed by discussion of the correct answers. Part of our study has been of the return of growth of suburbs and car culture in post-war America. We watched a collection of automobile advertisements from the 1950s to further understand the explosive growth of this industry after World War II. Questions for parents: 1. What congressional district is Redlands in? 2. Who is our new representative in the 114th Congress? |
