We watched a chapter of the American Century documentary about the Kennedy administration and the major events of 1960-1963. Students used a handout to take notes on what they learned. We reviewed for the Quest over Chapter 17, then watched the CNN Student News. CNN is producing a series of episodes about paying for college, which began today.

After the CNN Student News, we began our study of the Kennedy & Johnson administrations, the years from 1961-1968. President Kennedy used the phrase "the New Frontier" to describe the challenges facing the U.S. at the beginning of the 60s and to call Americans to action to address these challenges. We studied the 1960 presidential campaign and its major issues, then looked at domestic successes and setbacks of the Kennedy administration. We'll continue with foreign affairs on Thursday.
Students received their copy of the New York Times Upfront Atlas and Almanac today. Please keep this in a safe place, ready to use in future classes. Also, please keep your graded U.S. cities assignment for future use. Quiz on Thursday over Chapter 17 terms and people, plus information from today's class. After watching the CNN Student News, students worked on assignments: U.S. Cities, the Freedom Riders paper, and/or Leaders of the Civil Rights Movement.
We finished watching Freedom Riders, then students spent time researching and writing their paper. We also began an assignment learning more about five figures (leaders) of the Civil Rights Movement: Medgar Evers, James Farmer, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Malcolm X.
We finished class with the CNN Student News. |
