Students took a quiz over Chapter 7 today. We then reviewed the rubric for the Decades Project and worked in small groups on the project. We will have two groups present next Tuesday.

Today we began our study of Chapter 7. Students watched a C-SPAN bio of William McKinley and used their textbooks and devices to complete a handout. We also listened to John Renbourn perform White House Blues while watching a brief PowerPoint about the assassination of McKinley in 1901.
We discussed the ideas of Social Darwinism, Manifest Destiny, WASP, and American exceptionalism, essential ideas behind the spread of U.S. power around the world beginning in the 1890's. Students then answered questions based on Chapter 7.1 (see the assignment on the Home page). We watched a second C-SPAN video about the Spanish American War and completed a handout. Students took a review quiz of presidents in chronological order with party affiliation. We finished watching the first episode of The Century. Students finished writing about changes in America during the Progressive Era and turned in the paper they began writing last Friday. If you missed class either on Friday or Tuesday, you can watch The Century on YouTube: The Century, America's Time: Seeds of Change, parts 1, 2 and 3. We watched a GM promotional film, "In My Merry Oldsmobile," linking this with the changes the auto brought to America.
Students spent most of class working on the Decades Project. We finished up with the CNN Student News. On Thursday we will begin our study of Chapter 7. Please read at least section 1 by then. While I was in Washington D.C., students read chapter 8 and answered questions about the Progressive Era. Today I asked them to list the three presidents of this time that they studied: Roosevelt, Taft and Wilson, and identify at least one important accomplishment they are known for. Students then wrote one paragraph about changes in America brought about during this time.
We then watched most of the first episode of The Century, listening for other changes in American life, which students added to their paper. We will finish the episode next Tuesday. Continue preparing your Decades Project. Your goals are to become an expert in your chosen decade and wow the class with your presentation. I've returned to class after being gone on the 8th Grade Washington DC trip.
After watching the CNN Student News, students worked on the Decades Project. They also had time to complete the Chapter 8 Progressive Era questions and/or the presidential biographies from C-SPAN. |
