We began our study of the war in Vietnam today. Students have been reading Chapter 19. I led the class in answering questions based on section 1. We watched the first 25 minutes of Inside the Vietnam War, a National Geographic production. During the final five minutes I explained the Opposing Views assignment (download the handout on the Downloads page; see more information on the Home page).
We watched a 2015 news report on racism in America, tying it to the episode of All In the Family we watched last Friday. We then went back in time to listen to discuss the influence of and listen to the music of Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. Over the next couple of weeks we will sample more 1960s culture.
The football players who missed the Chapter 21 quiz last Friday took it today. Students practiced writing the essay on Watergate in preparation for the test on Friday. Two students shared their partly completed essays. We also reviewed other topics for the test.
I led students through a discussion and review of vocabulary terms and people from Chapter 21. Students then took the quiz.
We finished our study of Watergate today. Students listened to a novelty song from 1973 "Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Dean." Students helped each other with the answers to a couple of the questions on the two Watergate worksheets before we turned them in. Students then used Socrative to review the cast of characters. We listened to a little of David Frye's 1973 comedy album, Richard Nixon: A Fantasy.
There will be a quiz over Chapter 21 on Friday, which we will trade and grade during class. The test is on Friday and will primarily cover Watergate. Students downloaded and scanned a cast of characters from the Watergate scandal. Then they used an accompanying handout to practice identifying these people. We continued watching the National Geo documentary about Watergate. Students wrote an exit ticket: describe three characters from Watergate.
We read the "Smoking Gun" transcript, the document that President Nixon was finally forced to release, which then led to his loss of support in Congress. We began watching a National Geographic documentary on Watergate, which we will finish watching on Tuesday.
Students should continue answering the questions on the handout they received today (over the two original source documents). We will spend a little time with it in class on Tuesday. The handout is due on Wednesday. We watched a C-SPAN bio of President Nixon. Students defined vocabulary terms and answered questions on the corresponding handout. Students then downloaded the Watergate Background PDF from the Downloads Page. I led the class in defining and discussing terms and events from the corresponding handout. We had time to read and discuss U.S. v. Nixon. On Monday we will download and read the Smoking Gun Transcript, fill out the handout for these last two documents and begin watching Watergate, a documentary from National Geographic.
